Infant and Pediatric Physiotherapy
Pediatric Pelvic Floor
We often forget that children can have pelvic health concerns as well. At PEI PBH we treat the following pediatric pelvic health conditions:
Urinary incontinence/enuresis and retention
Bowel encopresis, constipation, and painful bowel movements
Pelvic pain
Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
Endometriosis
Infant Latch
Those who experience pain with breastfeeding, recurring blocked milk ducts, mastitis, or have been told their baby has a “bad latch” may benefit from an assessment by a physiotherapist trained in assessing the cause of these issues.
This includes an assessment of the baby’s musculature, oral cavity, and breastfeeding. Treatment often includes gentle stretching, exercise, and play based strategies .
Torticollis
Infant torticollis is a tightness in the musculature on one side of a baby’s neck. This can be caused by their position in the womb, a difficult birth, or a positional preference after birth
A baby with torticollis may:
- Tilt their head one direction more than the other
- prefer to look at something over their shoulder, rather than turning their head
- Have trouble breastfeeding on one side
Plagiocephaly
or “Flat Head Syndrome”
Plagiocephaly is a flat spot on one side of a baby’s head.
This can be from their position in the womb or spending a lot of time on their back. It is often secondary to having torticollis
